Slip Casting Workshop - April

Service Description

This workshop will teach how to make a simple 2-piece slip casting mold. Slip-cast molds are used for production pottery and allow ceramic artists the ability to create exact replicas of a piece to save production time and provide consistency with a product. Class 1 Saturday 4/20, 12-5pm : We will teach how to prepare the object for mold making, learn how to mix and pour the plaster and go through the step by step process of casting the parts to create a finished two-part mold. Class 2 Saturday 4/27, 12-3pm: Once molds have dried, we will teach how to prepare the slip and pour to cast. We will also learn coloring techniques using colored slip to enhance visual effects while pouring the slip. Class 3 Sunday 4/28, 12-3pm: We will teach how to demold and clean the seams of the object. Repair tears or imperfections. For our class, please bring a SIMPLE, NONPOROUS object you want to cast. - This can be glass, plastic, glazed ceramic, hard rubber, etc. - Wood, Plaster, and unglazed pottery is not good. - If you’re not sure you may want to bring a few objects: - A single handle coffee cups - Small vases, bowls with footings, - Small bottles. - The shapes should not be too irregular. ***Objects should be no larger than 4” W x 5” L x 7” H and simple in shape*** ***Any relief detail should be confined to opposite sides of the items. For instance, front and back but not sides. Or sides but not front and back*** *** Non-Claytivity members will fire at their own studio *** Workshop taught by Corky Cholakian Education: Pratt institute, Brooklyn NY BFA Communication arts. As a multidisciplinary artist, I have been a Graphic Designer, Fine Artist, Sculptor and Ceramic artist. Each discipline evolving into the next. I currently maintain a studio in the arts district where I do production pottery products I design myself, which sell in various stores, galleries and online web stores. I began experimenting in ceramics in 2012 as an extension for my fine art painting. Creating sculptures and learning various techniques which included mold making. I am self-taught and continue to develop various techniques for Mold-making. I started teaching mold-making workshops in 2018 to share my knowledge with fellow potters and help them learn techniques to improve their production capabilities. Mold making is not substitute for hand building or wheel throwing but another tool to use if you are creating production pottery. ***Note: No member discounts for this workshop***
