Service Description

This workshop will teach how to make a simple 3-4 piece slip casting mold. Slip- cast molds allow ceramic artists the ability to create multiples for production pottery to save production time and provide consistency and also a beneficial tool for artists who want to replicate multiples of an object for use in sculpting. The objective of the workshop is not only to learn how to make a mold but to also learn slip-casting techniques to add color and design not achievable with hand building. Class One 12-5p: I will teach how to prepare the object for mold making, learn how to mix and pour the plaster and go through the step-by-step process of casting to create parts 1 and 2. Class Two 12-5p: I will teach how to prepare the object for mold making, learn how to mix and pour the plaster and go through the step-by-step process of casting to create parts 3 and 4 Class Three 12-3p: I will teach how to prepare the slip for pouring. Learning how to color slip using mason stains. Demonstrate various techniques for using colored slip to achieve coloring effects in the mold. Class Four 12-3p: We will teach how to demold and clean the seams of the object. Repair tears or imperfections, attach handles and prepare for firing. For our class, please bring a NONPOROUS object you want to cast. See object types below. -The best objects glass, plastic, glazed ceramic, hard rubber, etc. -Wood, Plaster, unglazed pottery is NOT reccomended. -If you’re not sure you may want to bring a few objects Objects should no Larger 5”Wide x 7” Long x 5” High. Workshop taught by Corky Cholakian Education: Pratt institute, Brooklyn NY BFA Communication arts. As a multidisciplinary artist, I have been a Graphic Designer, Fine Artist, Sculptor and Ceramic artist. Each discipline evolving into the next. I currently maintain a studio in the arts district where I do production pottery products I design myself, which sell in various stores, galleries and online web stores. I started teaching mold-making workshops in 2018 to share my knowledge with fellow potters and help them learn techniques to improve their production capabilities. Mold making is not substitute for hand building or wheel throwing but another tool to use if you are creating production pottery.
